The Friends of South Devon College is a charitable trust established in 2008, whose main aim is to raise funds to remove barriers that may restrict students from participating in educational and enrichment experiences available at South Devon College. We work to ensure that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds do not have lower levels of attainment than their peers that would be likely for them without intervention. People come to us as a last resort when all other opportunities for funding support have been exhausted and they are at risk of having to drop out of their qualification or miss an important enrichment opportunity.
In the past 12 months we have seen a huge rise in applications for help from learners living in challenging circumstances and extreme financial difficulty. We do our utmost to support and it is no exaggeration to state that without it scores of young people would have been, or were in danger of being lost to education.
In the coming year we expect even more demands on our charity as more learners, especially apprentices, fall outside the official support systems. Every pound will help, but in truth we need to at least double our funds to raise £50,000 each year, not only to meet hardship requests, but to support enrichment programmes, which is the second part of our remit.
All we raise goes to support our learners. The money comes from our own fund raising events, such as the Sports Awards and 10k run, from sponsored initiatives by enterprising individuals and the occasional generous donations from charitable foundations or business.
Any help you can give with personal support and by promoting our campaign will help us to build a sustainable stream of income to cope with exceptional periods of pressure as they arise. This is a regular giving scheme for businesses and individuals, the cost of which as you can see in the leaflet below is as little as a cup of tea a week.
Chairman of Friends of South Devon College
Students of all ages and abilities, from all backgrounds, can use South Devon College as a stepping stone to realizing their aspirations. Often described as the engine room of the local economy, the College enables local people to develop talent and skills to an increasingly high level, and supports innovation and enterprise.
Around 11,000 students pass through the college each year and almost 90% of those will go on to apply their new skills and knowledge locally, thereby helping to improve economic performance.
With the support of the Friends of South Devon College, we are able to ensure that hardship is not a barrier to education, to provide enhanced opportunities and better support students to achieve their full potential.
Your support of this cause will help to improve the longer term prosperity for local people and the local economy.
The College is passionate about how the power of learning can transform people’s lives and the money received by Friends of South Devon College is critical in helping people take part in life changing experiences. The Friends of South Devon College provide financial support to benefit our students through awards, bursaries and donations. This support relieves financial hardship that may otherwise restrict many students from participating in learning and enrichment experiences and so we are extremely grateful for your support.
