Building has started at Sherford. Situated just to the east of Plymouth, Sherford will be a brand new community of homes, schools, shops and leisure facilities. It is the largest and most exciting new development to be given the go-ahead in the South West for many decades – and you could play a part in making things happen. Leading the new community development is the Sherford Consortium, a joint partnership between national homebuilders, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey.
Construction of Sherford will require a large number of skilled workers across many trades. Roofers, carpenters, dryliners, bricklayers, ground workers, scaffolders, electricians, plumbers, plasterers and painters are just some of the types of trades that will be needed at the site.
The Sherford Consortium is committed to ensuring that local people benefit from the building of the new community. One way of doing this is through the provision of training opportunities. Getting trained in construction skills at Sherford can lead to permanent jobs, with new skills increasing your chances of working on other developments or construction sites too.
South Devon College, in partnership with City College Plymouth, is pleased to be delivering a new Sherford Skills Training Scheme. Working with the Sherford Consortium, we are providing new opportunities for you to access apprenticeships, traineeships, work experience and other training. If you are leaving school, working in construction is a great career choice. Sherford also provides excellent opportunities for people wanting to up-skill, change career path or return to work.
Construction sector jobs are often very well paid compared to average wage levels in the South West and provide a work environment which has great team spirit and is highly rewarding – how many people can say that they trained or worked on a new community where perhaps they, their family, friends or future children could live? Sherford will provide a mix of housing types with many of them being affordable homes integrated alongside open-market homes.
