Train to be a Teacher

train to be a teacher

Why train to be a teacher?

Would you like to make a difference in the lives of young people or adults seeking to improve their knowledge or skills?

Would you like to acquire skills that can be used in a variety of roles not only in colleges but also other organisations like hospitals, residential care centres, leisure centres or private businesses where training of any sort is provided?

A teaching qualification can enhance your flexibility in the job market; provide new and exciting employment opportunities or useful additional income for people seeking part time employment.

There has never been a better time to consider a career as a teacher, particularly for anyone thinking about teaching maths or English. It may be easier and cheaper than you think to retrain for teaching in further or adult education, and colleges welcome applications from a broad spectrum of people with diverse backgrounds.

How long would it take?

The shortest award can be completed in a few days and even advanced qualifications, like the new Diploma in Education and Training, can be completed in one year.

How much would it cost?

The Diploma in Education and Training we are offering at South Devon College, provides the recognised national qualification for teaching in further and adult education for only £1,995.

For graduates, the government are also offering tax free bursaries up to £20,000 for suitably qualified graduates who want to train as maths or English teachers. To be eligible you must have an honours degree in English (or an arts or humanities subject) or maths (or a science or engineering subject).

A similar bursary scheme also exists for any graduates considering a career teaching students with special educational needs (SEN). The SEN scheme is open to graduates in any subject.

When could I start?

Right now! South Devon College are currently recruiting throughout the academic year. Students enrolling on the new programme at the South Devon College Management Centre at Heathfield, who plan to train as teachers of maths or English, will not only be able to take advantage of a competitive tuition fee but also an internship scheme that will provide opportunities for them to work as a volunteer at the College supporting and assisting with classroom teaching.
