Noss Marine Academy, in Kingswear, Dartmouth, is based on the River Dart and is a maritime centre of excellence for training and education. We are an approved training centre for The Royal Yachting Association (RYA), a member of The British Marine Federation (BMF) and The Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL), and an accredited centre for City and Guilds, EAL Awards and Plymouth University.

The stunning location is situated within the South Hams and is just a short drive from Torbay, which means that you will benefit from operating on a tidal river with access to the open sea. The Noss Marine Academy offers a wide range of courses, which will develop all the skills you require for employment, both on and off the water. You will be supported by our fully qualified staff, all of whom have years of industry as well as academic experience, to ensure you get the most out of our unique, specialist resources.


Courses

This engaging qualification will provide you with strong knowledge of the varied components that make up the structure of boats, developing the skills necessary for their successful production.

You will focus on a variety of techniques to ensure you become a skilled professional, including: interpretation of lofted lines, drawings and specifications; the knowledge needed to obtain the shape of moulds and templates; and the skills required to mark, cut out, assemble and finish the elements that make up a boat.

Upon completion you could progress into an apprenticeship with a suitable employer or the BTEC Level 3 in Marine Technologies.

Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night.

The course is taught with a min of 5 days, 3 weekends or 3 days plus 2 days.

Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.
It is a satisfying but intensive week, with candidates often working towards a Certificate of Competence.

This theory based course is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day.

Course topics include; the basics of seamanship, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chart work, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations, construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, life jackets and life rafts. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising. The course is taught over 40 hours with formalised exam papers as assessment.

The diesel engine course is designed for leisure sailors and motor boat owners who would like essential, practical knowledge about their boats diesel engine. This is an extremely practical course, taught in our fully equipped marine engineering workshops.

The syllabus is comprehensive without being overwhelming, you will learn about the following principles of the diesel engine;
- Naturally aspirated
- Turbocharged diesel engines
- Fuel system
- Cooling system
- Air system
- Diesel engine electrical systems
- Basic fault finding principles

This is a five day RYA Dinghy Instructor course for experienced dinghy sailors, who want to teach at RYA dinghy sailing training centres.

This course covers how to teach sailing in dinghies up to seamanship skills standard.

The course is practically based and you will be sailing every day either as an instructor or as a dummy student for other candidates. The course is continually assessed with a final day moderation by a second coach.

Is this course right for me?
The essential outboard engine maintenance course is designed for leisure sailors and motor boat owners who would like a little more practical knowledge about their outboard engine. The course is very practical, taught in our fully equipped marine engineering workshops.

What will I be learning?
The syllabus is comprehensive without being overwhelming, you will learn about the principles of the outboard engines, maintenance requirements and techniques, the fuel system, the cooling system, the air system and basic fault finding principles.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, just an interest in learning about outboard engines.

How will I learn?
The course is taught at our Noss Marine Academy based at Noss Marina on the River Dart. This course is taught in a very practical way in our marine engineering workshop. You will work on real outboard engines and equipment.

Our one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages.

The subjects specific to boating include:
- The Recovery Position in a confined space
- CPR, including the drowning protocol
- Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
- Seasickness and dehydration
- Medical assistance or advice by VHF
- Helicopter rescue

This is a full-time course that lasts for one year. The course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the marine sector, as well as the high level practical skills required to excel in the industry. You will study units such as Coastal Management, Fisheries, Wildlife Populations, Water Quality, Organism Identification, Tourism and Recreation and Ecological Concepts and Application. You will need 4 GCSE grade Cs or above (or equivalent), plus level 2 English and Maths. The qualification is assessed by coursework. You will need to undertake a work-placement which we will support with. On sucessful completion of the first year you may be able to progress to our Marine Science Foundation Degree. You will also be qualified to seek work in the marine sector.

This is the ideal course for you if you wish to pursue a career in marine engineering, as you begin by learning the essential skills to form the foundation for a successful career in this dynamic and exciting industry.

You will be assessed by completing a range of practical tasks, evidenced through a portfolio you will produce. Practical sessions are delivered in our fully equipped workshop, whilst the essential underpinning theory and knowledge is delivered in our specialist classroom facilities.

Upon successful completion, you can progress to the Level 3 Diploma, the BTEC Level 3, or consider an apprenticeship.

The Marine Engineering Level 3 Diploma is the ideal progression route if you have completed the Level 2 Certificate, and will further improve your existing knowledge and practical skills.

You will begin by developing diagnostic abilities across a range of marine engineering systems, as you prepare for employment. Assessments on this course consist of practical tasks that are evidenced by a portfolio, with teaching delivered in both our specialist classrooms and workshops featuring the latest equipment.

Upon completion, you can progress into an apprenticeship or full-time employment.

This is a course for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct operation procedures.

The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.

This is a full-time qualificaiton delivered over three days a week. You will study a variety of units that are contextualised towards marine engineering and boat building.

You will develop theoretical knowledge whilst working on practical marine projects in our specialist facilities. You will also have the opportunity to gain RYA qualifications alongside the course, and upon completion, can consider progression to employment or Higher Education.

Spend one day with an experienced instructor to familiarise yourself with the handling characteristics and equipment on your own boat.

The day can be spent learning the things you want and need to know to get the best experience from your boat.
- Close quarters handling and mooring techniques.
- Use of electronic navigation aids.
- Best use and positioning of safety equipment.
- Preparing for a passage.
- Local pilotage.

How will I learn?
The day is entirely practical and will be built around your needs.


What else might I want to know?
You will be responsible for the vessel, fuel, berthing costs and insurance.

What can I do afterwards?

This two day, practical based course is a comprehensive introduction to Power Boat Handling. This course equips you with enough knowledge and skills to safely operate displacement and planing vessels within inland and costal waterways.

Course topics include;
- Practical handling of Power Boats [safe operating manoeuvres, coming alongside and mooring, anchoring, man over board and recovery techniques]
- Essential seamanship skills
- Vessel construction, parts and equipment of a power boat,
- Essential position fixing, weather and tides
- Collision regulations
- Essentials of navigation and chart work
- Emergency and safety procedures including use of flares and life jackets
The course is taught over 2 days. Assessment is through practical demonstration of Power Boat Handling.

Candidates should have logged at least five seasons' experience of powerboating, preferably in a range of boat types and sizes. For those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation, this period is reduced to one season.

Candidates will attend a three day instructor course run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer and assessed by an independent Trainer. The course will consist of:
- Principles of practical instruction
- Lesson planning
- Teaching styles
- Use of questioning
- Preparation and use of visual aids
- Assessment of students' learning
- Explanation and presentation of theory subjects
- The structure of the scheme
- Planning progressive teaching sessions

This one-day programme is a pre-entry requirement for the RYA Powerboat Instructor course and includes the opportunity to brush up on personal powerboat driving skills followed by a skills assessment. This will require a high standard of boat driving, seamanship and personal knowledge within the Powerboat Level 2 syllabus.

The course is designed to assess your powerboat handling skills and background knowledge, with candidates expected to demonstrate their ability in all aspects of the Level 2 syllabus as described in the Powerboat Logbook G20. Your assessment includes all elements of the Powerboat Level 2 direct assessment, with relevant theoretical knowledge also tested.

Funding

We have a wide variety of financial support available for adults to fund your studies, as well as a dedicated finance team to help make studying with us affordable.

If you are aged 19 or over, and studying a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course, you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn't take your household income into account and doesn't involve a credit check.

We can also support you with a Learner Support Fund, which can assist with costs including childcare, college meals, exam fees and course materials. The amount of funding you can receive depends on your personal circumstances, and you could be entitled to free tuition if you're studying a Level 2 course. In the event that you do have to pay a course fee, this can be managed in an affordable way through our direct debit scheme, with monthly payments starting at just £25.

Are you an adult looking for an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way of gaining important skills and qualifications with work-based training. You'll also receive a wage whilst you study, which makes apprenticeship training a fantastic option for adults preparing for employment.

You can start an apprenticeship even if you are already employed, or the College can help you secure an employer in a relevant field. They develop real work experience, and you gain both technical and academic skills with 4 days per week spent in the workplace and the remaining day in College.

We also have an extensive degree programme, delivered in partnership with Plymouth University, so when you complete your studies you could progress to a related university degree that will develop the knowledge you need to excel.

If you don't feel quite ready for university study, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas can help you prepare, so there's nothing to stop you from achieving your goals. We have courses in a number of subject areas, as well as support with interview techniques and UCAS applications to other institutions.
