Carpentry

Studying carpentry and joinery at South Devon College is a fantastic way to learn a trade that could last you a lifetime. In our specially equipped workshop facilities, you will acquire the skills and abilities necessary to work in this constantly evolving trade.

You will begin your studies by learning the introductory skills of carpentry, working on an induction joint programme that has been designed specifically to improve your hand skills. After you have developed the essential skills you will undertake a wide range of carpentry activities, working on roofs, kitchens and stairs using your advanced skills and our modern machinery.

During your course you will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing community projects, where you will gain valuable experience of working on-site. These projects have proved to be immensely rewarding for our students, as they work on structures that will stand the test of time and actively contribute to the community. You will also build your working relationships, team building and self-confidence, which will prepare you well for future employment.

Matt Oakley: Carpentry student

I have recently completed the Carpentry Level 2 Diploma, and am looking forward to progressing to my third year of study. I've developed key skills for employment, and have also improved my self-confidence. I've also benefitted from guest speakers, who have provided a real understanding of this industry. I plan to become a fully qualified carpenter, which I am now well on my way to doing thanks to my studies.

Carpentry and Joinery - Level 1 Diploma

The Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma is a varied and exciting introduction into carpentry and the construction environment. You will hit the ground running with various practical tasks that will improve your basic hand skills, and you will participate and run your own building project during off-site community work that develops teamwork and employability skills. These enrichment programmes are highly rewarding, and numerous site visits give you an insight into the wider construction trade. Upon completion you will be well placed to progress to the Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma.

Site Carpentry - Level 2 Diploma

The Level 2 Diploma Site Carpentry course at South Devon College provides you with specialist facilities and resources required for the training you need. Our facilities are fully equipped with the tools and materials needed to practice your skills in a professional, hands-on environment. You can work towards qualifications that lead directly into employment or enable you to progress to the level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry at South Devon College. South Devon College works closely with employers to ensure that the skills you learn are the ones they are looking for in their future employees.

  • Maintenance to non-structural carpentry work
  • Carrying out second fixing operations
  • Structural carcassing operations

Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to be working towards achieving Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to be working towards achieving English at Level 1
  • You must have completed an appropriate vocational qualification at Level 1
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Site Carpentry - Level 3 Diploma

This qualification is a natural progression from the Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma, and will further develop your skills and knowledge so that you can work at an advanced level in the construction industry. You will also be prepared for higher-level qualifications that could enable you to qualify as a team leader or a manager. Assessment for this course is by practical assignment and multiple choice tests, and upon completion you could progress into employment or consider applying for the FdSc Sustainable Construction and the Built Environment degree at South Devon College.

  • Installing and maintaining non-structural and structural components
  • Erecting complex structural carcassing components
  • Setting up and operating cutting and shaping machinery
  • Analysing the construction industry and built environment
  • Technical information, quantities and communication with others
Site Carpentry  Level 3 Diploma

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 2
  • You must have completed an appropriate vocational qualification at Level 2
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject
