Computing and Digital Technologies

Studying Computing and Digital Technologies at South Devon College is all about working with modern equipment to build an exciting future. You will have access to all of the latest technology to create the most dynamic and challenging learning environment possible.

You will become familiar with programming languages such as VB.Net, Java, C#, C++ and Python, producing programs for Android, Windows and Linux. This will prepare you for employment working with a comprehensive range of systems. As a College, we invest in staying current so that when you complete your studies you will be able to progress seamlessly into the computing industry.

All of our courses are assessed by our passionate teaching staff, all of whom have a wealth of industry experience. We can offer you courses starting at Level 1 and progressing all the way through to university-level study with our Foundation Degree in Computing, so whatever your goals are, you can achieve them with us. Our learners leave College with the skills necessary to gain employment in a wide range of areas, and past students have gone on to work in network management, website development, software engineering and systems support.

Every student at South Devon College has a Personalised Learning Programme; a custom plan tailored to you as an individual that ensures you gain the academic, vocational and employability skills necessary to achieve your goals and find employment upon the completion of your studies.

We have 4 fulltime courses in Computing and Digital Technologies:

Computing and Digital - Level 1

This is a broad course that considers elements of hardware and software computing as well as digital technologies. It provides the perfect introduction to the world of IT, computing and digital and forms a solid foundation for future study. It allows individuals to acquire IT skills that will help them work effectively and productively in their employment. Upon completion, you could progress to Level 2 Computing, and based on your experiences at Level 2 you will begin to decide which area of computing you would like to specialise in.

Computing and Digital Level 1

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 1
  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D or above
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Computing Technologies - Level 2

The Computing Technologies Level 2 Diploma could be perfect for you if you are interested in studying a broad range of computing. This course is a great introduction to computing or as a progression pathway from our level 1 computing course. This course will develop your knowledge and practical applications of computing and prepare you for progression to a Level 3 Computing course where you can decided upon your future pathway to specialise in. You will be introduced to topics such as computer networking, systems architecture and learn how to create websites and computer software applications.

Computing Technologies Level 2

Entry Requirements

Computing (Software Development) - Level 3 BTEC Diploma

This course is a great opportunity to develop your understanding of software development, providing you with a comprehensive range of skills. The course is designed as a progression route from level 2 computing studies as well as for those who are new to computing. You will learn how to use programming development environments to create websites with client and server technologies, and create programs for desktop and mobile platforms. You will use programming languages such as VB.Net, Java, C#, C++ and Python to produce programs for Windows, Android and Linux. This course is designed for natural progression to a degree. Is

Computing (Software Development) Level 3 BTEC Diploma

Computing (Hardware & Systems) - Level 3 BTEC Diploma

This course provides advanced knowledge of computer hardware and network systems, enabling you to excel in the computing industry. The course is designed as a progression route from level 2 computing studies as well as for those who are new to computing. You will learn how to implement and manage networks, whilst gaining knowledge of Cisco systems and virtualised servers. You will study the principles of programming, enabling you to develop automated systems with the Raspberry Pi and mbed microprocessors as well as exploring the world of cyber security. This course is designed for natural progression to a degree.
