Computing and Digital Technologies

Studying Computing and Digital Technologies at South Devon College is all about working with modern equipment to build an exciting future. You will have access to all of the latest technology to create the most dynamic and challenging learning environment possible.

You will become familiar with programming languages such as VB.Net, Java, C#, C++ and Python, producing programs for Android, Windows and Linux. This will prepare you for employment working with a comprehensive range of systems. As a College, we invest in staying current so that when you complete your studies you will be able to progress seamlessly into the computing industry.

All of our courses are assessed by our passionate teaching staff, all of whom have a wealth of industry experience. We can offer you courses starting at Level 1 and progressing all the way through to university-level study with our Foundation Degree in Computing, so whatever your goals are, you can achieve them with us. Our learners leave College with the skills necessary to gain employment in a wide range of areas, and past students have gone on to work in network management, website development, software engineering and systems support.

We have 5 fulltime courses in Computing and Digital Technologies:

Computing (Software and Hardware) - Level 1 Diploma

This is a broad course that considers elements of both hardware and software. It provides the perfect introduction to the world of computing and forms a solid foundation for future study. You will learn through both practical activity and theory sessions, which incorporate discussion and research. Our specialist staff will support you in developing the skills necessary to progress in the industry, or to study on higher level courses. Upon completion, you can progress to a Level 2 Computing course, where you can decide which area you would like to specialise in based on your experiences at Level 1.

Computing (Software and Hardware) Level 1 Diploma

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to be working towards achieving Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to be working towards achieving English at Level 1
  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D or above
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Computing (Software Development) - Level 2

If you have an interest in software development then this is the perfect course to develop your existing knowledge and prepare you for a career in the software industry. You will learn how to use a range of computer programming development environments to demonstrate essential techniques for desktop, mobile and web platforms. During the course you will have access to Windows, Linux and Android operating systems, enabling you to become familiar with a range of platforms. Upon completion, you can consider employment in the computing industry, or alternatively progress to one of our Level 3 courses in Computing.

Computing (Software Development) Level 2

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 1
  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D or above
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Computing (Hardware & Systems) - Level 2 BTEC First Diploma

If you are interested in working within the network and systems support industry, the Computing (Hardware and Systems) Level 2 Diploma is the perfect course for you. This course will develop your understanding of networking, systems support and fault diagnosis principles. You will also become adept at using a range of platforms such as Windows and Linux operating systems, Raspberry Pi and automated control systems. Upon completion, you will be able to consider employment in the computing industry, or alternatively you can progress to one of our Level 3 Computing courses.

Computing (Software Development) - Level 3 BTEC Diploma

This course is a great opportunity to develop your understanding of software development, and will provide you with a comprehensive range of skills. You will learn how to use programming development environments to create websites using client and server technologies, and create computer games for desktop and mobile platforms. You will use programming languages such as VB.Net, Java, C#, C++ and Python to produce programs for Android, Windows and Linux. Upon completion, you will be able to consider employment in a range of roles, or progress to the Foundation Degree in Computing offered at South Devon College.

Computing (Hardware & Systems) - Level 3 BTEC Diploma

This course provides advanced knowledge of computer hardware and network systems, enabling you to excel in the computing industry. You will learn how to implement and manage networks, whilst gaining knowledge of Cisco systems and VMware virtualised servers. You will develop an understanding of the principles of programming to enable the development of automated systems with the Raspberry Pi and mbed microprocessors. Upon completion, you can seek employment or progress to the Foundation Degree in Computing offered at South Devon College.
