Studying Engineering Technologies and Electronics at South Devon College is the perfect start to an exciting career, where you could create innovative systems, products and technologies that help industry and wider society.

Our experienced staff members have years of experience across a range of specialisms, including mechanical and electrical/electronic sectors. As experts in their field, they can pass their extensive knowledge on to you in areas such as: 3D printing, programming logical controls (PLC), computer-aided design (CAD) systems and precision machining.

As a part of our exceptional Engineering department you will have the opportunity to attend on-site visits to local hi-tech companies and the chance to gain valuable work experience within the industry. You will also be able to attend seminar sessions with chartered engineers and get involved with many other exciting opportunities that can develop your employability skills and allow you to take your first steps towards your career.

I've always enjoyed fixing and tinkering with things from an early age, so a career in engineering made perfect sense. Since joining the College, I've gained valuable skills and been supported not only in my studies, but also finding a work placement and an apprenticeship; I'm really excited to take my skills into the workplace and begin my career.

We have 4 fulltime courses in Engineering Technologies and Electronics:

Level 1 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing - Level 1 Diploma (EAL)

This introductory programme of study at level 1 is designed to help you develop the basic practical skills needed to work in the Engineering industry. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in developing your hand-fitting skills, learn how to assemble engineering materials and demonstrate how to use precision machinery. You will be assessed by completing both written tasks and practical assignments. Upon completion, you could progress into employment as an apprentice, or alternatively continue your studies on a Level 2 course. This course is also available to start in January 2017.

What will I learn?

  • Carry out basic fitting techniques
  • Carry out basic machining techniques
  • Forming and assembling engineering materials
  • Demonstrate and interpret engineering drawings
Level 1 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing  Level 1 Diploma (EAL)

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 1
  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D or above
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Hi-Tech Engineering and Technology - Level 2 Diploma (EAL)

The Hi-Tech Engineering and Technology Level 2 Diploma covers all of the fundamental skills that are common in engineering practices, whilst offering you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability in a broad variety of engineering activities. You will learn in a modern and fully equipped engineering facility, which has the latest technology to enable you to gain experience with technology currently used in industry. You will be assessed by completing both written tasks and practical assignments. Upon completion, you could progress into employment as an apprentice, or alternatively continue your studies on a Level 3 course.

Hi-Tech Engineering and Technology Level 2 Diploma (EAL)

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 1
  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade C or above
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject
  • You will be required to carry out an aptitude test

Hi-Tech Engineering - Level 3 BTEC Diploma (90 Credit)

This course is designed to offer you a specialised programme of study, providing you with the opportunity to develop advanced skills and career opportunities within the hi-tech engineering sector. You will study a range of mechanical and electronic subjects and work on exciting practical engineering projects, which could focus on areas such as manufacturing, robotics and automation and control. You will be taught in our fantastic technology laboratory and also excellent classroom facilities, furnished with the latest equipment and technology, and upon completion, you can consider employment or study on the Advanced Engineering and Technology Level 3 Diploma.

Hi-Tech Engineering Level 3 BTEC Diploma (90 Credit)

  • You will need to have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Advanced Engineering and Technology - Level 3 Diploma (EAL)

This is the perfect course for refining the skills and knowledge you have acquired, covering a diverse range of topics in the exciting world of engineering. The focus of this course is on developing advanced machining skills in a realistic working environment, and looks at essential areas such as communication for technicians, computer aided design (CAD) and Programmable Logic Control systems and automation. The Advanced Engineering and Technology Level 3 Diploma can help you progress to an advanced level of practical engineering, and will prepare you well for employment or an apprenticeship with a suitable employer.

Apprenticeships with South Devon College

Engineering

Working as an apprentice in the field of Engineering and Electronics is a great way to create innovative systems, products and technologies that help industry and wider society. The aim of the Enigneering Apprenticeships is to provide apprentices with the skills, underpinning knowledge and transferable skills required to operate in each of the engineering sub-sectors which include the following learning pathways at South Devon College: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Hi-Tech Engineering.

Apprentices will be employed carrying out a wide variety of defined semi-skilled, craft and technician roles through the pathways described, while also aiming to meet current and future skills needs by supporting retention, motivation and performance within local organisations. Support is available for applicants to secure employment within the Engineering pathways.
