I studied Sports Performance at the College, alongside coaching basketball at a junior level. I gained a variety of skills, and went on to win the Devon Youth Coach of the Year accolade, before progressing to coaching a senior team. I've had the opportunity to take the South West Under 16s to several European events, and I'm looking forward to progressing as a professional coach in the near future.
Before joining the College I was a physical trainer with the RAF for seven years. I've always wanted to teach so jumped at the chance to join South Devon College, where I teach across all of the sports courses we offer. Our courses here at the College are second to none; we provide an outstanding learning environment with inspirational teachers who are passionate about passing on their skills. Not only will you leave here with excellent grades, but also with plenty of additional qualifications that you can't get anywhere else, preparing you for employment when you leave the College.
There are exciting career opportunities with our Apprenticeship programmes in PE and School Sport, Personal Training and Sports Development. Apprentices find themselves working in local primary schools, fitness centres and national sports organisations. Successful apprentices often go on to manage businesses, teach in schools or attend university.
Broadly, apprenticeships in sports, fitness and sports education aim to improve access to sport and physical activity for people of all ages and abilities, develop communities through the use of sport and physical activity and address wider social inclusion agendas. The work is challenging and varied and may include the development of performance sport, community sport and physical activity and /or participation for particular target groups. Sports development involves organising projects, programmes, information and training to encourage people to increase their activity and have a healthier lifestyle or participate in their community.
