Hospitality and Catering

A career in hospitality could take you anywhere in the world, with sectors as varied as hotels, restaurants, cruise ships and contract catering. This industry has a vast range of different job roles, meaning you will have every opportunity to find a specialism that interests you and begin a fulfilling and dynamic career. You could find yourself working as a chef, waiter or waitress, events coordinator or even as a manager.

You will benefit from the expertise of our tutors, all of whom have years of industry experience, as you demonstrate your cooking ability with recipes from around the world, or showcase your customer service and management skills. You will learn and work in our commercially run Horizons restaurant, which is always popular with guests and provides fantastic experience of a real working environment as well as with the Mitch Tonks Seafood Academy.

Matthew Redclift: Hospitality and Catering student

I studied professional cookery at South Devon College, and was nominated for a trial at Mitch Tonks' Seahorse restaurant in Dartmouth. I am now employed as an apprentice chef there, whilst gaining qualifications in English and maths. I learnt a lot during my time at the College, and gained practical experience working in a local cafe. I'm really looking forward to progressing in my career, and potentially following in the footsteps of my employer.

Introduction to Professional Cooking - Level 1 Diploma

You will need to be passionate, motivated, organised and have a real interest in working in a people orientated industry, by developing a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. Practical skills will be taught, developed and assessed in our training kitchens and restaurant. Lessons will involve practical demonstrations, theory, guest chefs and speakers, industry visits plus computer-based activities will contribute to your learning. A portfolio of practical assessments, under pinning knowledge will evidence achievement on the course. You'll gain skills to work in a professional kitchen in a hotel, restaurant, school.

Customer Service for Hospitality Industries - Level 1 Certificate

The hospitality course will allow you to develop a fantastic foundation for future study and employment. You will need to be passionate, motivated, organised and have a real interest in working in a people orientated industry, by developing a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. You will be taught practical skills, developed and assessed in our training kitchens and restaurant with lessons involving practical demonstrations and practice, theory, guest chefs and hospitality speakers. Patisserie and Confectionery - Level 2 Certificate

The Hospitality industry is a energetic and exciting sector. A career in hospitality offers a dynamic working environment, an industry with continued job growth and boundless possibilities. During this course, you will gain the professional craft skills, knowledge and other workplace essentials that will help you secure employment as a pastry chef or confectioner. You will learn practical patisserie skills, as well as work-based skills such as health and food safety, costings, menu planning and researching healthier foods. This qualification is assessed by assignments, practical skills and theory tests, and will include a work experience placement.

The hospitality industry is a dynamic and evolving industry with a breadth of career opportunities. If you have achieved a level 1 Certificate in Hospitaltiy, and wish to develop your existing skills and knowledge at an advanced level, then this is the right course for you. This programme introduces more in-depth study of key skills, restaurant skills, customer service and workplace skills. The course will also include a work experience placement that will help you develop essential work-related skills. This course will enable you to consider progression into an apprenticeship or full-time employment.

If you want a career within hospitality and catering industry, and would like to train in preparing and cooking food, then this is the course for you. You will develop practical skills and knowledge, as you master skills and techniques surrounding hospitality and catering such as baking, roasting, grilling, frying and many others. You will also gain key employability skills and essential knowledge relating to important topics in the industry, including health and safety and customer care. Upon completion, you may consider progression to the Hospitality and Professional Cookery Level 3 Diploma, seek an apprenticeship or full-time employment.

As part of the Mitch Tonks Seafood Academy, you will gain professional craft skills, knowledge and other workplace essentials from acclaimed experts whilst developing as a practitioner during a work experience placement. Practical skills will be taught, developed and assessed in our training kitchens and restaurant and theory lessons will involve demonstrations and tutor delivery. Guest chefs and speakers, industry visits plus computer-based activities will also contribute to learning. Upon completion, you may be able to progress to further study or find employment on an apprenticeship programme.

Hospitality Supervision - Level 3 Diploma in Food and Beverage Supervision
