If you want to get on the water and begin a thrilling career in the marine industry, then look no further than the Noss Marine Academy at South Devon College. Based on the banks of the River Dart, our marine centre of excellence is the only place to consider for your training and education.

The stunning location is situated within the South Hams and is just a short drive from Torbay, which means that you will benefit from operating on a tidal river with access to the open sea. The Noss Marine Academy offers a wide range of courses, which will develop all the skills you require for employment, both on and off the water. You will be supported by our fully qualified staff, all of whom have years of industry as well as academic experience, to ensure you get the most out of our unique, specialist resources.

During your studies you will enjoy the complete maritime experience for your chosen career in the industry. The Academy is located within a fully operational boatyard, providing you exposure to the full range of career pathways within this diverse sector.

We are also a member of the British Marine Federation, as well as a recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre. Our links with highly regarded professional bodies ensure our curriculum remains relevant and responsive to regional, national and international industry trends. This maximises your future job opportunities and enables you to immediately enter employment.

I plan to become a Marine Engineer Officer, and my course at South Devon College has helped me progress in improving my future career prospects. I've had many memorable experiences, including driving a powerboat, working on the engine of the 38ft yacht, Aspiration, and stripping and rebuilding an engine; all great experience for when I enter employment.

We have 7 fulltime courses in Marine:

Exploring Maritime Skills - Level 1 Certificate

This course is the perfect introduction to the marine sector. You will be assessed by practical tasks, delivered both on and off water, utilising a range of vessels and equipment in our workshop, as well as the production of an evidence-based portfolio. You will be given the opportunity to complete the following qualifications within this course: - RYA VHF Certificate - RYA First Aid Certificate - RYA Powerboat Level 1 Upon completion of this course you could progress to either of our Level 2 qualifications, to refine your skills and knowledge.

Boat Building Maintenance - Level 2 Certificate

This engaging qualification will provide you with strong knowledge of the varied components that make up the structure of boats, developing the skills necessary for their successful production. You will focus on a variety of techniques to ensure you become a skilled professional, including: interpretation of lofted lines, drawings and specifications; the knowledge needed to obtain the shape of moulds and templates; and the skills required to mark, cut out, assemble and finish the elements that make up a boat. Upon completion you could progress into an apprenticeship with a suitable employer or the BTEC Level 3 in Marine Technologies.

Boat Building Maintenance  Level 2 Certificate

Diploma in Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards - Level 2

This programme will provide you with the essential skills to suit the different circumstances associated with working in coastal or inland marinas, or in boatyards. Learners can specialise in lifting and moving boats and yachts, mooring and berthing boats and yachts, moving loads in boatyards, and maintaining marinas and boatyard equipment.

Marine Engineering - Level 2 Certificate

This is the ideal course for you if you wish to pursue a career in marine engineering, as you begin by learning the essential skills to form the foundation for a successful career in this dynamic and exciting industry. You will be assessed by completing a range of practical tasks, evidenced through a portfolio you will produce. Practical sessions are delivered in our fully equipped workshop, whilst the essential underpinning theory and knowledge is delivered in our specialist classroom facilities. Upon successful completion, you can progress to the Level 3 Diploma, the BTEC Level 3, or consider an apprenticeship.

Marine Technologies - BTEC Level 3 Diploma

Working in the Maritime Industry offers you the chance to participate in a range of exciting environments. It is suitable for learners who aim to eventually move into Higher Education or to simply up skill their current knowledge in the maritime sector. This is a full-time qualification delivered over three days a week. You will study a variety of units that are contextualised towards marine engineering and boat building.

Marine Technologies BTEC Level 3 Diploma

Entry Requirements

Marine Biology and Ecology - Advanced Technical Diploma Level 3

This 2 year course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the marine environment and marine life such as starfish, seahorses and sharks. You will find out about the ecosystems and habitats where they live as well as being trained in the practical skills required to be successful in the marine industry. You will be taught by experts in Marine Biology in our specialist facilities. There is plenty of practical work on the course which takes place around the coast so clothing suitable for working outdoors will be needed. You will undertake visits to beaches, fisheries, aquariums and freshwater habitats and have the opportunity to participate in an overseas trip. You will also have opportunities to go out on the boats at our Marine Academy where you may be able to spot seals, dolphins and porpoises. You will undertake your own research into a marine subject of your choice and help our resident researchers at College. The qualification is mainly assessed by coursework. On completion you could move on to our Foundation Degree in Marine Science or into employment where there is a wide range of jobs available.

Marine Biology and Ecology Advanced Technical Diploma Level 3

Marine Engineering - Level 3 Diploma

The Marine Engineering Level 3 Diploma is the ideal progression route if you have completed the Level 2 Certificate, and will further improve your existing knowledge and practical skills. You will begin by developing diagnostic abilities across a range of marine engineering systems, as you prepare for employment. Assessments on this course consist of practical tasks that are evidenced by a portfolio, with teaching delivered in both our specialist classrooms and workshops featuring the latest equipment. Upon completion, you can progress into an apprenticeship or full-time employment.
