Samuel Kalisz: Plumbing student

During my studies I gained an apprenticeship, working alongside a qualified gas engineer servicing and repairing boilers, assisting with planned maintenance and call outs. I can really relate the theory I lent in the classroom to the working environment; the apprenticeship has been a great process, with someone always there to support me as well as the opportunity to put the skills I have learnt into practice.

We have 4 fulltime courses in Plumbing:

Plumbing - Level 1 Diploma

The Plumbing Level 1 Diploma, awarded by City and Guilds, is available at both our Paignton and Newton Abbot Campuses. It is ideal for undertaking plumbing training to become a plumber, and allows you to progress to the Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Plumbing. You will participate in practical sessions in the workshop and complete a portfolio of evidence for assessment, as well as theory-based exams. Upon completion, you can progress to further study or consider a plumbing apprenticeship and employment.

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to be working towards achieving Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to be working towards achieving English at Level 1
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Plumbing - Level 2 Diploma

The Plumbing Level 2 Diploma is the ideal progression route from the Level 1 qualification, and is also available to new entrants with basic and prior knowledge of the industry. The course enables you to develop the advanced skills to succeed in the plumbing industry. Assessment consists of completing practical workshop assessment books and online examination. Upon completion, you can progress to further study or be well prepared for an apprenticeship or employment within the plumbing industry. This course can also be used as part of the NVQ Level 2 qualification, alongside suitable employment.

  • Installing pipework systems, materials and components
  • Rainwater systems
  • Hot and cold water systems

  • Installation of bathroom suites
  • Maintenance of components in hot and cold water systems

  • You will be required to have achieved Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to have achieved English at Level 1
  • You must have completed an appropriate vocational qualification at Level 1
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Plumbing - Level 3 Diploma

The Plumbing Level 3 Diploma will help you build upon your previous knowledge, enabling you to learn, develop and practise the skills required to excel and gain employment. You will be studying a range of skills that enhance your understanding of non-domestic plumbing systems, preparing you for the numerous progression opportunities in the plumbing and heating sector. Upon completion, you could progress to Higher Education or consider an apprenticeship or employment. This course can also be used as part of the NVQ Level 3 qualification, alongside suitable employment.

  • Sanitation and drainage systems

  • Domestic gas principles
  • Career awareness in building services engineering

Gas - Level 3 Diploma

This course will enable you to progress onto the ACS Gas Assessments which will then allow you to register with Gas Safe to specialise in working on gas systems. You will study the core principles of working with gas, including combustion, gas science, ventilation, gas regulations, chimneys and flues. You will learn through practical activity and theory sessions, and produce a portfolio of evidence. Learners will need access to a Gas Safe registered mentor to enrol on this qualification.

Gas Level 3 Diploma
