Security and Event Safety

Our Security and Event Safety courses at South Devon College are designed to help you enter one of the UK's fastest-growing industries, whether you want to become a festival steward, club door supervisor or retail guard.

We have a highly qualified and experienced teaching team who have all worked in the industry before moving into teaching and training. All of our staff members keep up-to-date with the industry standards, having worked as security managers and supervisors at events such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, MTV Crashes Plymouth and more, as well as attending regular industry conferences to update their training.

At South Devon College, we know what the security industry looks for in potential employees which is why we can help prepare you for employment. The qualification you work towards is only a small part of your learning during your time here; these are industry-related courses that you will build upon to develop the key qualities that all employers seek from experienced operatives.

All of our students that have successfully completed the course have gone onto jobs with local and national companies, and worked at events such as Glastonbury and Royal Ascot. Our team have excellent links with both local and national security and events companies who are involved with the largest contracts in the UK, and we aim to get you into employment in this sector.

Kevin Lawrence: Security and Event Safety lecturer

Kevin is Programme Co-ordinator and a Lecturer in Security and Event Safety at South Devon College.

After a 12 year career in the Army, Kevin has worked and managed in most areas of the security industry, from event response to hospital security.

He is a qualified Lecturer, Security and Aegis Physical Intervention Trainer and has managed his own event security company. He has recently worked in management and supervisory roles at prestigious events such as MTV Crash Plymouth and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

He manages a team of outstanding staff who run the Security and Event Safety provision.

We have 3 fulltime courses in Security and Event Safety:

Security and Event Safety - Foundation

The Security and Event Safety course will help you prepare for employment in the security or event stewarding industries, and includes the qualifications necessary to gain a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence, depending on your age. The course is delivered over 1 year and is designed for anyone with an interest in retail security, site guarding, door supervision, events security and stewarding. Skills and qualifications gained as part of the course are further enhanced by work placement. Upon completion of the course, you could progress to the advanced course, into an apprenticeship or consider employment.

What will I learn?

  • Level 2 Certificate in Door Supervision, Security Guarding and CCTV
  • Level 2 NVQ Certificate Spectator Safety
  • Level 1 Certificate in Customer Service
  • Level 1 Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Level 2 Award Emergency First Aid at Work
  • Part 1 Physical Intervention for Door Supervisors - Aegis Skills
Security and Event Safety  Foundation

Entry Requirements

  • You will be required to be working towards achieving Maths at Level 1
  • You will be required to be working towards achieving English at Level 1
  • You should have a genuine interest in this subject

Security and Event Safety - Advanced

The Security and Event Safety Advanced course will include the qualifications necessary to gain a Security Industry authority (SIA) licence, depending on your age, which provides students with an understanding of supervising security staff and events. This is a 1-year course designed for anyone with a genuine interest in understanding security operations, supervising spectator events, health and safety and customer service. Skills and qualifications gained as part of the course are further enhanced by a work placement to refine your employability skills. Upon completion of this course, you may progress on to an apprenticeship, further study or employment. If you are interested in becoming a part of the the security industry, including door supervising, stewarding, security management, guarding and more, then this is the course for you.

Security Industry - Short Courses

South Devon College provides a range of short courses that will enable you to gain the necessary qualifications for your Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence, or to develop and enhance your existing knowledge. These courses may lead on to apprenticeships, employment or to further study. All of our physical intervention courses use the Aegis Skills programme, and are awarded by the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC). We can also organise bespoke advanced physical intervention through Aegis Skills.

Our Security and Event Safety courses at South Devon College are designed to help you prepare for and gain entry into one of the biggest growing industries in the UK. Whether stewarding at Festivals, Door Supervision at Nightclubs or catching shop lifters as a guard in a store, one of our courses will suit you!

We have a highly qualified and experienced teaching team and our team have all worked in the Industry prior to becoming Lecturers and Trainers. They all still keep current and up to date with the industry by working as Security Managers and Supervisors at events such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, MTV Crashes Plymouth and many others, along with attending regular sector conferences and update training.
