Applied Science (Cambridge Advanced National) Level 3
This is a new alternative academic qualification equivalent to one A Level and carrying the same UCAS points. It was designed with the help of universities and employers to develop the transferable skills needed for life-long learning and the work skills needed for successful progression to a science-based job. These jobs could be in the Science sector or in the Healthcare Science sector. Both sectors have a growing need for qualified staff.
The qualification is ideal for anyone who wants to extend their understanding of key topics in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. It would fit well alongside A Level subjects such as geography, psychology, mathematics, or perhaps a single science.
You will cover three units each year to give you a Certificate at the end of year 1 (equivalent to an AS qualification) and an Extended Certificate at the end of year 2 (equivalent to a full A level). One unit is assessed by examination each year. In the first year one unit is assessed by coursework unit and in the second year there are two coursework units.
All the units are delivered with an emphasis on practical skills and vocational applications. In the first year you will cover topics in all three sciences and learn research skills by designing, carrying out, and reporting on a project chosen by you, with guidance from your lecturers. In the second year you will learn more about the impact of science on society and the important role of scientists in carrying out research and delivering accurate factual information to the general public, and to politicians. You will also study units on practical analytical techniques in chemistry, and on environmental science.

The staff at the College were so kind, supportive and helpful when I first met them. My peers had different abilities - some were already part of the fitness community, some were already personal trainers and the rest were beginners like me. It didn’t matter how new or how much experience you had. We all became a team and we all enhanced and supported each other’s experience. The Exercise to Music class gave me the confidence to understand how to support the participants, the confidence to stand in front of people, and support them all to do their best during training.
