IMI MOT Testing and Inspection Accreditation Combination Level 2/3
IMI Accreditation recognises the current competence of professionals working within the Retail Motor Industry and their commitment to an ethical Code of Conduct.
This accreditation is governed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the professional association and Sector Skills Council for the Retail Motor Industry. Course content and structures are regularly reviewed to ensure they stay up to date and meet the evolving skills needs of the sector.
To achieve IMI Accreditation, you must successfully complete a series of practical skills and knowledge assessments. The Light Vehicle Inspection Technician route includes five practical assessments and two online knowledge tests. Candidates must also agree to and adhere to the IMI Code of Conduct. To maintain your accreditation and demonstrate ongoing competence, reassessment every three years is required.
An Inspection Technician is expected to work independently and ideally will be in full-time employment with a minimum of three years’ experience. This ensures familiarity with vehicle servicing techniques, inspections, and system diagnosis.
Careers and Employability:
The IMI Accreditation for Light Vehicle Inspection Technicians confirms the knowledge, skills, and behaviours expected at Level 3. This accreditation lasts for three years and can serve as an entry route to the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) for technicians without a prior Level 3 qualification.
This accreditation is also available as a combined package with the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7).

Course Details
- You must be able to work unsupervised - ideally, they should be in full time employment with at least 3 years experience to ensure they are familiar with the techniques for vehicle servicing, inspection and system(s) diagnosis.
The content of this qualification has been designed to reflect the contents of the National Occupational Standards for MOT Testers. The content of the qualification includes:
Working safely within a vehicle test centre
Communicating with colleagues and customers
How to manage and maintain their CPD
Carrying out pre-test checks
Carrying out an MOT test
